The last time Deftones played a show in Sac was three years ago, headlining Monster Energy’s Aftershock Festival in 2015. They toured Northern California last year, but for Sacramento, where the band formed in 1988, no love. The closest show that summer was in Concord, according to the Sacramento Bee

This year’s different. Deftones will headline Aftershock 2018, which announced its lineup Monday. Also heavy: System of a Down headlines the latter day, Sunday. The band hasn’t performed in the U.S. since 2015, and even longer, their last record released in 2005.  Alice in Chains, Incubus, At The Drive-in, Godsmack, Slash, 311 and Korn’s Jonathan Davis top the bill of 36 artists announced thus far (See below). More Sac pride: Dance Gavin Dance is playing, and with more artists TBA, there’s hope: the festival has recruited local openers in the past

The outdoor fest, which this year returns to Discovery Park on October 13 and 14 (Saturday and Sunday), started as a one-day concert in 2012, which Deftones also headlined. It’s the go-to festival for nationally-touring heavy metal and hard rock bands around here, and pulled in around 50,000 people over the weekend last year. Think Weezer, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, and in 2017, Ozzy Osbourne and Nine Inch Nails.

Ticket prices range from $89.50 to $120 for a single day, $149.50 to $225 for the weekend. They go on sale Friday, April 13.

And in case you missed it: Concerts in the Park announced their 2018 lineup last week. Franz Ferdinand, The Crystal Method and Hobo Johnson will play the free outdoor summer concert series at Cesar Chavez Plaza downtown, which kicks off on May 4.
