BURRITO WATCH NO. 1: Slightly Skewed's California burrito

Welcome to Burrito Watch, SN&R’s new semi-regular burrito blog. Why? Because burritos rule.

Let’s dig in right away. We’re staring with a burrito that sounds like a crazy idea, but turns out to be crazy good: Food truck Slightly Skewed is mashing up a Korean-style burrito with a California burrito. But they’re just calling it a California burrito.

Let’s break it down:

Korean burritos, similar to Korean tacos, are a Korean-Mexican fusion food, with Korean-style fillings (i.e. bulgogi, kimchi)—all wrapped in Mexican tortillas. They were popularized in Los Angeles at Roy Choi’s Kogi Korean BBQ food truck.

California burritos are a San Diego staple, and basically consist of carne asada (grilled beef), fries, sour cream and guacamole.

Slightly skewed is slightly skewing the California burrito and (the Korean burrito) by taking a bugolgi beef skewer, chopping up the meat, and throwing it in a burrito with their “smashed fries”—uber-crispy fried potatoes that are a ittle smashed up and topped with some kind of green-colored garlic aioli (I detected a bit of ginger, but that may have been from the bulgogi marinade) and green onion.

It costs $8.25. It’s pretty sizeable and the flavors and textures pair well together. Maybe the only thing missing that I’d like to have as an option is some ground or diced kimchi to throw in, or to have on the side (yeah, I like spice in my burritos, and I like banchan with everything). Kimchi or some other pickled veggie might add even more texture and flavor.

Overall, it’s a good way to start off Burrito Watch. Let’s give it an 8.5 out of 10.

It’s worth mentioning that Slightly Skewed specializes in Asian street food mostly on skewers, which I’ve had before and are pretty good. It’s a unique concept for a food truck, and it’s good to have food trucks that are doing something other than really pedestrian burgers, pizza, or burritos. I think Sacto’s food truck diversity could still use a little work.

Catch the Slightly Skewed truck tonight from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Track 7, 826 Professor Lane in Natomas; or—if you’re heading to the Bay this weekend—at the Main Post Lawn in San Francisco’s Presidio on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Find the truck around town by visiting its website, Facebook page or Twitter page.
