East Sacramento artisan cheese shop The Cultured & The Cured closes its doors for good on Saturday, Dec. 13. Its owners Andrew and Kelly Hillman made the announcement on Facebook Monday night.

Thank you for all of your support. It has been a pleasure bringing East Sacramento quality cheese & charcuterie. Unfortunately, we must close.

The brief posting notes that all of its food inventory—not just cheese, but local, artisan products like sauces and crackers too—will be on sale during its final days. The shop had been open for just over one year. Andrew Hillman learned the cheese shop ropes at the Cheese School in San Francisco after years as a restaurant chef. He prided himself on sourcing nearly all of his 110 cheeses from California.

In an August interview with Andrew Hillman, he said business was slow. People were coming in for cut-and-wrap cheese to go, but they weren’t sticking around to take advantage of the shop’s menu of cheese and cured meat boards, macaroni and cheese, sandwiches and salads, he said. Hillman had hoped that a liquor license and additional seating—wine, beer, bar stools and a patio were added in September—would provide a needed lift.
