Arena Casualty Watch: Marilyn's on K to close

In another sign that downtown Sac as we know it is quickly fading into a thing of the past, the owners of Marilyn’s on K announced Thursday that they’d sold the business.

The basement club, known for its emphasis on local rock, blues and jazz, will close effective Nov. 1.

Marilyn’s first opened in 1998. The original location was at 12th and K streets (and the name, appropriately, was Marilyn’s at 12th & K). It moved to its current location at 9th and K streets in 2005 and also shortened its moniker. Whatever the address or name, the venue played host to some great acts including Jackie Greene and Mother Hips.

Owner Linda Swanigan thanked patrons via a press release:

“We thank our loyal customers, whom we consider our friends and family, for your support over the 16 years,”  the press release stated. “We are so proud of our employees who have made the Marilyn’s experience possible over the years.”

Turns out the new space will be something called Coin-Op, which is described as a “bar / arcade”.  And no, the San Diego-based business won’t feature live music.

Bummer. Another live music venue down.

No word yet on why Swanigan opted to sell, SN&R emailed for comment, and we’ll keep you posted on a response. My gut says the impending arrival of the arena and the increased worth of properties on K street has something to do with it.

Stay tuned.
