PHOTO ESSAY: March Madness

by Paul Piazza

March is a traditionally a time of distractions due to office tourney pools in the workplace and busted brackets everywhere. This year, was one of late rains. But when it rains, it pours; and Sacramento was host to a plethora of phenomenal live acts during the year’s third month.

The following photo essay is but a mere sampling of all of the great music that made its way through the city during the past month. Included were two amazing, eclectic jam bands from New Orleans—Dumpstaphunk and Galactic—plus Austin stoner metal beasts, the Sword, an all-female Led Zeppelin tribute group called Zepparella and one of Sacramento’s best funk acts, the Nibblers. There was also one side trip into San Francisco to catch a band that is a feast of raw soul power: Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings.

I wonder what April will bring.

Tony Hall of Dumpstaphunk.

Maggie Koerner of Galactic.

Kyle Shutt of the Sword.

Gretchen Menn of Zepparella.

Lynn Michael Palmer of the Nibblers.
