Try one of the top 10 beers in the world this Thursday at DeVere’s in Midtown

Parabola is a seasonal, semi-rare, special brew by West Coast-based Firestone Walker Brewing Co. If you’re even remotely into beer, then you know them; they brew the DBA, or Double Barrel Ale, that you can get at pretty much any bar in Sacto.

Parabola’s got a helluva lot more going for it than DBA, however, and is, arguably, their finest brew. First, it’s got heat, because it spent months in bourbon barrels. Then there’s chocolate, vanilla, coffee, dried fruit, roasty malt notes. It’s a complex but smooth Russian imperial stout that, at 13 percent ABV, proffers meaningful head change.

Anyway, the hook here is that Parabola is also a somewhat hard-to-find beer. Pangaea Two Brews Café got a case of it last month and moved all the bottles within an hour, I’m told. All other stores in Sacramento sold out of it.

This is probably because it ranks No. 8 on the BeerAdvocate.com list of Top 250 beers in the world (Heady Topper recently overtook the No. 1 spot; Pliny the Younger and Elder are two and three, respectively).

Which is cool. But it’s important to not lend much to these snob-inducing beer lists. Like cinema, beer is subjective: If you enjoy a brew that I dislike, that’s fine—more good brew for me. And vice versa.

But I digress: DeVere’s Irish Pub in Midtown (near L and 16th streets) will tap its lone keg of Parabola 2013 this Thursday, May 30, at 5:30 p.m. My guess is that a 10-12 ounce pour will set you back anywhere from $8-$10.

(Also, if you have tickets to this weekend’s Firestone Invitational Beer Fest in Paso Robles, Calif., but can’t attend—my email is nickam@newsreview.com.)
